The festive season is upon us. September heralds the beginning of the festivals all across India. It's the season of joys and family. Here are 8 more reasons to celebrate, with the best reads of September!
For the little ones this month, we sent out the cutest books ever! Our 5 to 6 year olds were delighted by them.
The first book was Jamal's Journey which is written and illustrated by the amazing Michael foreman. This is the story of love, friendship, fear and adventure! Jamal is a baby camel who walks in a caravan with his head held high, but what happens when there's a storm and Jamal separates from his fellow caravan members? How does he find them again?
.What we love: We love this simply illustrated book which brings out the true colours of the story to life. Michael foreman's endearing story melts everyone's heart
.What kids will love: The kids will relate to a baby camel, who is afraid when he loses his way in the desert. But also, they will love how courage and friendship successfully rescues Jamal!
.What we love: We absolutely love the combination of the two elements. It's one thing to say that Grandma's from an entirely different era, but a different planet? That's just madness!
.What kids will love: Kids will also love the combination of the two aspects, and of course they will roll on the floor laughing with the kind of eclectic items that these Grandmas pull out of their handbags.
The second age group between 7 and 8 got two equally fabulous books. Here are Petu and Padma!
.So, have you ever been so hungry that you could eat a house? Then you know how Petu feels. Although Petu doesn't eat houses, he eats everything edible in the house and in school. His friends are tired of his hunger pangs and decide to form a secret society to "save" their tiffins. Will they outwit Petu Pumpkin? Here's Petu Pumpkin, Tiffin Thief by Arundhati Venkatesh.
.What we love : The book is very easy to read and makes for a great bedtime story. We recommend this to adults as well.
.What kids will love : Kids will love the hilarious antics that Petu's friends have to pull, just to keep him away from their tiffins! They make a secret society for Pete's sake!
.The second book for this age group is a very interesting mix of fiction and non-fiction. Here's Padma who has an unusual pet. He's big and blue! But wait, he's from another era, prehistoric actually. Find out more about the prehistoric pal, Padma and a puzzling adventure. Find out the whole story with the adventures of Padma and the Blue dinosaur by Vaishali Shroff!
.What we love: We love that the book has so much information for the kids to learn from. They will firstly enjoy the super cool story about the dino that comes to life and secondly, they'll learn that there are famous excavation sites in India spread across the nation.
.What kids will love: Dinosaurs were fascinating. They can be awe inspiring and delightful at the same time. Kids will love Padma's pet!
The older readers from the 9 to 10-year-old age group received two interesting books this month.
.First up, we had Junkyard Jack, by Adrian Edmondson! This is the story of Jack, a little boy who loves the animals in the nearby shed. Amongst these, one of his favourites is Boadicea who can talk! Well, in this book, all animals can talk. After the shed's caretaker passes on, Jack is left behind to take care of these furry creatures. But slowly realizes that these animals might be the key to rescue his mother who is in prison for a crime that she didn't commit!
.What we love : We love the teaching that the good will always be rewarded with good! Jack finds a way to help out his mom because he believes that she is innocent and thus, wins his battles against deceits!
.What kids will love : The kids will love that all the animals in the book can talk! Who wouldn't love a talking pet? Maybe they could find a talking animal themselves!
.Next up, the kids are meeting a couple of wizards. They come from Madh, but, something's definitely wrong in this magical kingdom. Standing statues are sitting and frown-y ones are smiling! Looks like someone is messing with the rules of magic! Join the two wizard detectives who will finally restore magic into its rightful order. This is the Magicians of Madh by Aditi Krishnakumar.
.What we love : We love that the author has chosen to give two fearless role models to the readers. Even in a world of flying spells, both Meenakshi and Kalban aren't afraid to take a fight head on!
.What kids will love : Magic! Of course! They will truly believe in the power of magic when they are done with the book.
Lastly, for the grown up readers, here are the two wonderful books for this month.
.The first book we chose was about two dashing detectives that travel across the world to solve a mystery that revolves around a clandestine posse of criminals. These men have harassed people across the globe and they must be stopped. It is all up to Lil and Soph, who are best friends and but also daring dames! Here's Peril in Paris by Katherine Woodfine
.What we love : We love that the book is about two girls and how they love breaking stereotypes! These girls can raise a complete storm for justice!
.What kids will love : Kids will love the travel involves and the whirlwind mystery that takes Sophie and lily across the world. They will also love that both of them have an unbreakable bond which inspires the definition of true friendship!
.The last book for this month for the 11 to 12 year olds is Hello universe by Erin Entrada Kelly. Virgil, who has a psychic's appointment, hasn't turned up to see her. Wondering why, the psychic starts an investigation of her own. Looking for Virgil has never been tougher. Valencia and Chet have offered to help and they are trying their level best. Could Virgil be in danger? Or could it be something that neither one of them even imagined?
.What we love : We love the mystery that has been created around the Virgil's disappearance. It’s a light yet gripping story.
.What kids will love : The kids will love the light humour that comes its way and breaks the tension. Also, Erin's intriguing style of writing can really make the book un-put-down-able!
.Phew, that's a lot of excitement for one month! These crazy and unpredictable adventures will continue with a new set of books in the next month. So hang tight and wait in for the Outstanding October boxes that will have just as much fun and enjoyment as this. Until then, joyous reading to all!
